About

Chances are, your grandparents had a roof installed or repaired by us. We started as a "one-horse" roofing company in 1906. The company became a partnership in 1910 when Fred Sherriff purchased a half-interest in the firm from Mr. W.E. Polhemus. In 1913, Mr. Sherriff purchased Mr. Polhemus's remaining interest in the company and recruited B.G. "Bert" Goslin as his partner. In the early years, the partners focused on local commercial roofing. But interestingly, they also manufactured a full line of paints. "It was good paint," Mr. Goslin recalled, "but somehow we just couldn't make the big paint companies understand that we were competing with them—not just roof installers. In fact, they didn't even realize we were in the paint business!" Tar and gravel roofs for commercial flat roof applications were the only type of roof they were installing at the time. As the company was wrapping up their paint venture, however, they introduced an innovative line of interlocking, diamond-shaped, asphalt shingles for residential roofing applications. The business thrived. As the company began to grow, the partners saw a need to change the name from Battle Creek Roofing and Manufacturing Company to Sherriff-Goslin Company. With the success of their exclusive diamond-shaped impact resistant shingles, the partners were able to add roofing contractor locations throughout the midwest. Now, Sherriff-Goslin serves all of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana providing friendly service, quality residential and commercial roof installation, roof repair, StormMaster® Shake architectural shingles and, yes, they still install a highly advanced version of their original diamond shaped interlocking shingles called Art-Loc®. Three generations later, members of the Sherriff and Goslin families are still involved in the roofing business. It's easy to see why Sherriff-Goslin has been the Midwest's roofer of choice for over 100 years.
