June 2 Re-Elect Penny Lukenbill, Jim Masterson and Jon VanVactor County Council At-Large Penny Lukenbill As your County Council representatives, we will continue to oversee the more than 75 different budgets of more than $42.7 million, ensuring they are balanced and are fiscally sound, and making sure that the individual funds are used for the purposes required by law. the taxpayer in making our decisions. The proposed jail expansion has become a controversial issue in this election, with some saying it is unnecessary. However, facts presented by the Sheriff. Prosecutor, Probation Department, Community Corrections, and our judges support the Commissioners' unanimous decision to expand the jail. This has not been a rushed, uninformed decision made solely by the County Council. The jail has been over the recommended inmate level since March of 2018, and over total capacity since June of 2019. The current reduced population due to the COVID-19 Pandemic is more than likely a temporary situation. However, to say that the current jail is adequate is placing the staff and inmates at risk. It is important for taxpayers to know that the jail expansion would not be funded by property taxes, but by the special Local Income Tax, which can only be used for construction and operating costs of the jail. We will continue to support funding the Highway Superintendent's Road Plan as approved by the Commissioners. We will continue to support funding the Community Crossings Grant Match, totaling more than $2.5 million dollars of local funds for road projects. Over the past five years, over $15.9 million has been invested in our county roads. We will continue to support the Marshall County Economic Development Corp. with the county's annual contribution of $150.000 to assist in bringing new jobs and retaining current jobs in Marshall County.
