Keeping Your Life in Motion Richard McClain, DO Allied Bone and Joint SHOULDER PAIN Our shoulders are complex joints with a tremendous range of motion, slowing our arms to perform multiple activities. Like any complex structure, it can break down in various ways. Some common problems involve the bursa and the rotator cuff. The bursa is a lubricating sac that protects the cuff from wear and tear. Bursitis is painful inflammation of the sac. The rotator cuff is a four-tendon sleeve that holds the shoulder "ball in place while the bigger muscles move the arm. Inflammation of this is tendinitis Impingement occurs when one irritated structure affects the other. Left untreated, an impinging shoulder can eventually tear the rotator cuff, mucth like a rope rubbing over a sharp edge. Typical first-line treatments for inflammation and impingement include oral medications like ibuproten, rest, and ice. The next steps are cortisone injections and physical therapy. So, when does it require surgery? Well, that depends on you, your activity level, etc. Let me keep your Life in Motion. Dr. McClain is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon.
